Tips:

Sky in the evening is not so shinny as the eyes tend to believe.

To make a lightened building shine, apply just a thin layer of wash, and make its surroundings dull.

Work out the overall tone of the entire painting before going into small details; it helps build the atmosphere.

Tips:

The table is slightly tilted to allow the downward blending of color, creating foliage like texture…

Wet Paper.

Good paper and paints make a big difference; I use 300 lb Arches paper and Sennelier  watercolor; same Arches with different weight also produce different result.

Mixed colors recedes more than primary color.

Reduce hard edges; wet on wet helps achieving this.

When I was in Taiwan last August I found this product originally designed for Chinese Calligraher as a practicing pad. You can use water as paint and it will leave mark on this pad. And the mark will disappear after a while. It is good for saving paper. I thought since my painting rely a lot on “calligraphy” and line quality, it’s going to help me a lot.
I find recording your own painting process is a good way of self-critique. When painting spontaneously like I do, a lot of marks I make on paper are the result of split second decision, and I don’t make good decision all the time. Sometimes I might not realize I made a bad decision until I viewed my own video…

Recently I have been depressed by the pressure of applying for NIW, a status that will make me stay in the USA. So it’s kind of hard for me to concentrate enough to paint. I have to go through a process of meditation so my mind can focus – it’s normaly a long hot shower to refresh my mind. Then I can paint while all the mental engery is concentrated on my hands and the Qi is transffered to the brush tip. Otherwise my branches won’t dance.

Sounds like science fiction…

I have thought about doing this for quite a while…
It’s quite challenging to paint a watercolor within 10 minutes even though it’s only a postcard size.
I have to figure out the composition in mind first, then put the right colors on the pallete. The initial wash can’t be too wet otherwise I wouldn’t be able to paint anything on top of it. I have to also control the time of mixing colors and changing the right size of brushes accordingly, let alone holding a camera, keep an eye on the camera screen so the video won’t be out of focus while painting.
It’s fun to do though. I did a total of three today; the first one is a completely mess as the video is constantly out of focus.
I like the fact that I can see my own getures and become more conscious about the decsisons I made while painting, which I tend to ignore normally.

Mist

The painting itself is blur, but the photo came out even blurer; I intended to make the foreground tree to come forward more, but the dark palatte just let it blend in with the backgroun. Some brighter colors might have helped. The tree on the left was originally sharper, but after I rubbed it with wet brush tip, it become somewhat messed up.

It’s challenging to find an innovative way in painting watercolor. I think the main reason is beacause artists tend to stick to the technique instead of viewing watercolor as a medium to carry out the artistic vision.

Watercolor is challenging, hence people develop a system to treat watercolor. As knowledge cumulated, it becomes a kind of tradition: leaving blank for the highlight area, painting light area first then building up the dark slowly, sprinkling the paint for the foliage, using friscket to block out the white, using salt for the snow flake effect….etc. After all these technique introduced to a person, learning watercolor becomes a certain kind of routine to perfect these prediscovered technique, which really blocks the creative flow of every unique mind….

However, there is nothing wrong with these techniques, people learning art just need to keep in mind, watercolor is just a type of medium that helps convey ideas, and it applies to all other format of art….medium is like a vehicle, you shouldn’t carry it on your back once it helps you reach the desitination.
