I am taking a trip back to Taiwan for 3 weeks

It’s the first time since my family and I moved out 12 years ago…

Will be back on 9/5….

The first image is the one I did just a few days ago..

Again I paid more attention to the branches…

These two are of the same size…

and I am doing a bigger version of this painting right now.

I like the color scheme and the misty feeling of the lower image

and the branches in the upper image is better

I hope I can combine the two in the bigger painting.

Emerging Spring at Central Park #2

Emerging Spring at Central Park #1

#2 is a larger version of #1 I did a couple of months ago.
This time the colors became more subtle, and I place more stress on branches.
I didn’t plan to make the colors look this way, I just went by my feelings when I painted it.
Maybe it’s some kind of transformation in the use of colors after going through series of snow scenes and evening scenes.

Again, you can purchase this painting at My eBay Store.

12″ x 16″

I like the effect of the the previous painting…so I felt like doing a larger version of the same scene. The overall tone is warmer in this one…

Snow scene, New York, Central Park, watercolor, painting, Joseph Chiang, fine art, gift, landscape, Chinese Painting, Evening scene, bridge, lake, tree, branches, city scene

$150  Fixed  Price Listing
8″ x 12″
I view this painting as a somewhat defining one for my evening Central Park series…
In the previous paintings, I haven’t found a color scheme that I truly liked….I kept making them too intense….which isn’t my taste at all…let alone talking about fitting my style. It’s like painted by totally different artists when I place my evening ones with ones of snow scenes….
But with this one…I figured out a way to portray the illuminated sunset while keeping the overall contrast down….and it took a lot of muddy painting to achieve this.
It might sound simple…but artist are stubborn…I ruined paper after paper…all of them good 300lb arches….and then finally I realized I darkened the painting too much for all of them…It’s like sudden realization…I thought…why not paint them like the snow scene…keep everything soft and tone down the contrast….

Keep in mind you can always view the larger version of my painting at Watercolor Gallery

And purchase my painting in my store.

Title: Snowy Central Park #12
Size: 16″ x 12″
Type of Paint: Sennelier Watercolor
Paper: 300lb Arches CP
Color used: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Indigo, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, White

This is the third time I paint the very same scene after a photo I took back in March. I have done a series of snow scenes since then, but this is still my favorite composition. I made the size a little larger than the previous ones this time and pay even more attention to the details, especially the placement and movement of the branches. I made the greatest effort so far in the series to perfect the fluency of branches.

This is what the left-over paints can do…
with light washes I tried to create sense of depth
adding indigo+burnt sienna wash to the background helped push it back…
I tried to limited the amount of the layerings to the buildings…
Too much layering would bring the buildings forward…
the sense of atmosphere is achieved with preliminary wash..
before painting details…I wet the paper…use a large flat brush to quickly lay the sky and the middle ground foliage…I make sure I did everything before it dried
so there won’t be any hard edges..
colors used: cerulean blue, indigo, raw sienna, burnt sienna, yellow ochre….
