Watercolor format?

It is interesting how people view watercolor while comparing to oil painting. During the critique I had in class this Monday, a lot of people suggested me, included the professor, that I should try some new format instead of just using the rectangular paper. I think I have no problem with that, because I did try to experiment with format somewhat recently like my Minty Ivy and Black Ochre. But what I am wondering is, why then when people view oil painting, the issue of format is seldom brought up?
My opinion to the question is, a lot of people(not all) try new format just so that they can avoid the technical baggage from traditional way of painting. Watercolor is not popular in USA among the students, naturally it becomes a more difficult….and format becomes an excuse people use to cover up the technical inadequecy.
